We have all seen the famous movie 'Rocky' that shows him cracking open two raw eggs and gulping them down. And we have all heard the chatter out there about the risks of eating raw eggs and possibly getting salmonella. However, when we eat cake batter or cookie dough that thought goes right out the window (at least for me). I then asked myself, if eggs are so bad why do people continue to eat them raw in different forms?
If eggs are good for human consumption in both its raw and cooked form, then why can't dogs eat them? We feed eggs for our families for breakfast, why can't I feed them to my dogs so they can get the same nutritional value as me?
I'm going to break down the top 5 reasons why you should be feeding your dog eggs and the many health benefits of an egg.
#1 - Eggs Provide A Great Source of Protein
Eggs are a nutritional powerhouse! Eggs contain protein which are made of essential amino acids dogs need to thrive. Eggs also contain:
Vitamin A
Folate
Riboflavin
Iron
Vitamin B12
Selenium
Antioxidants lutein and zeaxanthin
Fatty acids
Just one egg alone contains 6g of protein packed with vitamins, minerals, and essential fatty acids.
#2 - Egg Shells Provide a Great Source of Calcium
A lot of people did not know that dogs can eat egg shells, Egg shells have over 380mg of calcium, magnesium and iron and are also great for bones and teeth.
On the inside of the egg, you will see a thin film that separates the outer shell from the egg white. This the egg shell membrane and this is especially good to feed because it helps with joint pain and improves joint function.
" Egg shells can help older arthritic dogs. Egg shell membranes significantly reduced joint pain and improved joint function in 51 dogs experiencing a range of joint problems, according to a 2016 Study." – American Kennel Club (AKC)
#3 - Great for Pregnant Mothers
The vitamins, minerals, protein and calcium benefits are great to feed expecting mothers. At week 7, the neonates skeletal system is fully developed. To prepare for this development and to reduce any added stress on the mother, some breeders start adding poached or scrambled eggs in their bitch's diet to prepare for this. The calcium and iron in the eggs will help contribute to the bone development in her unborn puppies.
#4 - Help with Itchy Skin & Allergies
Eggs are very helpful for dogs with itchy skin. This is because they are filled with essential fatty acids that helps keep a dogs skin and coat healthy and shiny. You will feel and see the difference in their coat after a few weeks of them eating eggs.
#5 - Readily Accessible
Eggs are almost always available at any grocery store. They are conveniently located at the corner store, or local grocery store. Be sure to double check the labels and get the ones that read 'Organic Pasture-Raised, Certified Humane, or Animal Welfare Approved.' These are considered the most nutritional and contain zero harmful pesticides, hormones, and added antibiotics.
